Guest Post: Life Insurance Isn’t Always About Death; It’s Also A Retirement Tool

The following is a guest post.  This post does not necessarily reflect the views of Suzanne and David E. McClendon, Sr. or Manian Debil Productions.

Life Insurance Isn’t Always About Death;
It’s Also A Retirement Tool

Many Americans view life insurance policies as a key part of their financial planning. But they tend to think in terms of how the insurance will benefit their survivors after they are in the grave – not how it might benefit themselves while they are very much alive.

If that’s the way they see it, though, they may be missing out on an additional way to help pay for retirement – something especially worth knowing if other investments go awry or a pension is non-existent.

“I think a lot of people are surprised to learn that their life insurance policy can help them handle expenses during retirement,” says Gary Marriage Jr., CEO of Nature Coast Financial Advisors (www.naturecoastfinancial.com). “They consider life insurance a death benefit. But it can be a lot more than that.”

How so?

Essentially like this, Marriage says: Over the years, a person pays premiums into a permanent life insurance policy with the intent to provide a death benefit as well as cash-value accumulation for as long as the policy remains in force.

If they reach retirement, and aren’t as concerned with the death benefit, they can withdraw from the insurance policy without paying taxes. Usually, you can withdraw up to the amount that you paid in premiums over the years, Marriage says.

Some other advantages include:
• Contribution limits don’t apply. The government puts a limit on how much money you’re allowed to contribute each year to an IRA. So your IRA is going to grow, but not to the degree that you would like. If you structure a life insurance policy so that it’s part of your retirement plan you don’t face those same dollar-amount limits, Marriage says.

• The cash value of the policy grows each year with interest, tax deferred. Investing in or purchasing a tax-deferred vehicle means your money can compound interest for years, free from income taxes, potentially allowing it to grow at a faster rate. And if you’re worried about the stability of the insurance company, the fact is insurance companies are some of the strongest financial institutions in the world.

• When you leave your children the money you’ve accumulated in an IRA, they have to pay taxes on it. But the beneficiaries of a life insurance policy don’t have to pay taxes.

• The federal government will penalize you if you withdraw money from an IRA or a 401(k) before you turn 59½. But if you need some of that life insurance money at an earlier age, you can withdraw without paying a penalty.  That’s a big advantage for those who suddenly find themselves in need of cash, but don’t want even more of their retirement savings to disappear into Uncle Sam’s coffers, Marriage says.

“It’s really important for people to take advantage of all the options they can when it comes to retirement,” Marriage says. “I think many people underestimate how much money they’ll need, often because they don’t take into account all the factors like taxes and inflation.

Maybe you’d never have to tap into that life insurance policy and it can all go to your beneficiaries. But it would be nice to have it there in case the need arises.

Book Review: Making Money from Home By Donna Partow

Making Money from Home
By Donna Partow

Making Money from Home is a great book geared toward women desiring to start a home-based business. It is full of encouragement and ideas on how to achieve balance between your home life and your business.

It offers pros and cons for including your children in your business and offers suggestions to avoid your children resenting you and your business.

Pros and cons for working with your spouse are also included.  Topics are suggested for couples to discuss before going into business at home. Partow stresses honoring your spouse’s wishes and keeping their needs in mind. It is important to keep the lines of communication open so that the business doesn’t rule or ruin your life and marriage.

There are many links sprinkled throughout this book for sites to help you research your business idea, to link your website, and other things.  This book was published in 2010, so some of the links are no longer working.  An Internet search should help you to find the information that you need for doing the suggested research.

Partow’s Making Money with Donna website does not appear to have been updated since 2013, but still contains posts that would be of value to someone starting a business at home.

Guest Post: 6 Super Summer Snacks for those Who Want to be Fit and Fabulous

The following is a guest post.  This post does not necessarily reflect the views of Suzanne and David E. McClendon, Sr. or Manian Debil Productions.

6 Super Summer Snacks for those Who Want to be Fit and Fabulous

FAIRFAX, Virginia – (June 28, 2017) – Snacking is something just about everyone does. It’s hard to resist the urge to grab some snacks, especially during the summer when you are having fun and on the run. The problem is that many people grab the wrong types of snacks, which may work against their desire to be fit and fabulous. Far too often, people reach for sugary snacks, which according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention can lead to health problems such as weight gain, obesity, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease. For those who want to be fit and fabulous this summer, it’s a good idea to pay attention to the snack choices they make.

“It’s so easy to eat far too many calories simply because we are grabbing the wrong snacks,” explains Coach Sarah Walls, personal trainer and owner of SAPT Strength & Performance Training, Inc., who is also the strength and conditioning coach for WNBA’s Washington Mystics. “It’s important to have healthy snacks on hand at all times and know what to reach for when you do go shopping or you are in a hurry. It may take only a minute to eat it, but done too often it can have lasting consequences.”

According to the American Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, snacks for those who are not very active should be no more than 200 calories. For those who are active, they recommend not going over snacks that are 200-300 calories. They also recommend only snacking when you are hungry and sticking to recommended portion sizes. It’s also important to keep the added sugar in check, considering that the Harvard School of Public Health reports the average American consumes 22 teaspoons of sugar a day, which is around an extra 350 calories.

Keeping this in mind, here are 6 super summer snacks for those who want to be fit and fabulous:

  1. Chia seed pudding – Chia are loaded with omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, protein, and other nutrients. Use the attached recipe to create a simple chia seed pudding that is nutritious and delicious.

  1. Homemade fruit popsicles – Use an online recipe to make some healthy homemade fruit and veggie popsicles. They will be great on a hot summer day and will give you a fruit serving.

  1. Yogurt –Opt for varieties that don’t have a lot of sugar. This will give you a boost in healthy bacteria, protein, and calcium.

  1. Apple with peanut butter – An apple dipped in one teaspoon of natural peanut butter or other nut butter is a healthy snack that will give you protein, fiber, and other nutrients.

  1. Melons – Summer is melon season and you can’t go wrong with loading up on watermelon, honeydew, and cantaloupe. They are loaded with vitamins and are refreshing.

  1. Avocado toast – Using whole wheat toast, spread a half of an avocado on it. That will give you some fiber, vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, and healthy fats.

“Don’t deny yourself the ability to have some snacks this summer, just be sure to reach for healthier options,” added Coach Walls. “Whether you are an athlete or you just want to feel better and look great, keeping healthier snack options in mind will go a long way toward helping you to reach those goals.”

Chia Seed Pudding Recipe

This chia seed recipe takes just 10 minutes to make and yields two cups of pudding.

  • 2 cups of unsweetened almond milk
  • 6 tablespoons of chia seeds
  • ½ teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon of sweetener (honey or maple syrup), optional
  • Berries for topping

Mix all ingredients together except for the berries. Stir to make sure there are no clumps of chia seeds. Put it in the refrigerator to set for at least two hours. Top with the berries and enjoy!

Multi-Level Marketing

One old way to raise your available income is by pursuing multi-level marketing.

You don’t see multi-level marketing as much today, but it is still around.

Many people confuse multi-level marketing with the old pyramid scams.  There is a very fine line between them.

In multi-level marketing, a person sells products.  He makes money by selling the products.  He also recruits others to sell the products.  He makes money off the sales of the people he recruits.

The more people he recruits, the more he makes.  Meanwhile, those he has recruited are
selling the product.  They are also trying to recruit more people to sell the product.  This may go several layers deep.

The problems start when those people start recruiting people to recruit people and no one is selling the product.

We were involved with Amway many years ago.  We made a pretty decent business and never signed up one person.  Not a one.  We made money from our sales.  It worked well for us.

We got out when David changed jobs and we got pregnant again.  There just was not enough time to work the job we had going and tend to our other needs.  It did work for us.

Book Review: The Big Deal of Taking Small Steps to Move Closer to God

Federal Trade Commission Required Notice:  We were sent a complimentary copy of The Big Deal of Taking Small Steps to Move Closer to God written by  Vashti Murphy McKenzie for the purpose of writing a review. This will not affect this review at all. In the words of our favorite U. S. History teacher, Anna Dean Pennington, “Eyes calls ‘em likes eyes sees ‘em.” We call them like we see them, too.

We are disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission's 16 CFR, Part 255

The book The Big Deal of Taking Small Steps to Move Closer to God is intended to help Christians to start where they are in their lives and realize that they don’t have to climb Mount Everest at the start of their walk with God, they just have to start.  They can start small.

This book is filled with different anecdotes that help underscore the author’s point in a way that makes it all make sense.

There is one anecdote the author shares about when she was practicing for the high jump back in high school.  The assistant coach set the bar higher for her than for the other students.  This assistant coach singled her out for a higher bar.  It was completely within her father’s power to change things; he was the head coach at the school.  But, he didn’t.

As it turns out, her father knew what was best by not intervening. Setting the bar higher made her a better jumper and helped her win, where the other students did not.

Isn’t this a lot like our Heavenly Father? Perhaps He could remove the trials from our lives.  But He does not because He knows it will be much better for us in the end.

This book is very-well written and a very engaging read.  We give it all five stars on our scale of zero to five stars.

One point the author, Vashti Murphy McKenzie, makes is that we could start out with 30 seconds of prayer and then seek to add just a little more each day.  Thirty seconds does not seem like much. If you watch our videos, you will see that the prayer at the beginning of the videos average about 30-45 seconds.  We know this because we have to time the animations to go along with the video.

Hamlet’s part at the end takes about forty-five seconds to a minute on average.  A lot gets said in those few seconds.  This means that you could breath a quick word of prayer and say more than you think.

The Big Deal of Taking Small Steps to Move Closer to God would make a great book to share in a small church class.  It provides many ideas for additional worship, one step at a time.  You will want to buy several copies for your church.
