NFL Stars Team Up with Biblica for
Sports-Themed Outreach in South Asia
Former Chicago Bears back ‘Game of Life’ distribution
to fans of ‘the other football’

Former NFL star Rashied Davis with participants in a soccer event in India who received a copy of Biblica's Game of Life book, featuring Scripture and testimonies of leading Indian soccer players.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. –  Four NFL veterans have teamed up with Biblica, the International Bible Society (www.biblica.com), to throw their weight behind a sports outreach that aims to score with thousands of young people in South Asia through “the other football.”
Matt Forte, Anthony “Spice” Adams, Rashied Davis, and Ray McElroy—who all played for the Chicago Bears during their careers—are helping provide free copies of Biblica’s Game of Life book to young sports fans in a major new initiative. First published last year, the book is now the focus of a campaign to distribute 90,000 copies.
Featuring testimonies of some of India’s top names in Indian soccer—which is widely known as “football” outside the United States—the book is the latest in a long line of creative ways in which Biblica has presented the Bible to new readers.
Being distributed at sports camps by Biblica’s ministry partner, the Sports Coalition of India, the publication includes the books of Luke and Acts, and invites readers to explore a relationship with God. The subtitle on the pitch-green covers reads: “Believe it or not there is a game even bigger than football—it’s called life.”
For many recipients, it will be their first time reading Scripture. Participants at the sports events include many young people with little or no exposure to the Bible, coming from Muslim homes, or from a background of addiction or homelessness. In addition to English, Game of Life is also to be made available in Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.
The former Bears have filmed endorsements for the India outreach, which will be posted at biblica.com/goal, and are expected to be shared through the players’ own social networks. Biblica hopes the NFL stars’ support will help raise the $30,000 still needed to fully fund the new effort, which is hashtagged #GoalCampaign.
One of the Sports Coalition team members, Tamil, told how “really useful” the book has proved already. “People love the football players in the book,” he said. “It mentions many football players' testimonies—how God changes their lives, about God’s love and how God transforms people.”
According to Aldrin Bogi, Biblica’s area executive director for South Asia, sports has helped in “breaking barriers between classes and castes” in India, making Game of Life “a great opportunity from a missions standpoint.”
He added: “While persecution is closing doors for conventional missions, sports will keep opening more doors. Our partners can use Game of Life to harness the power of sports not only to share the gospel but to promote life-affirming values in our society.
“One big emphasis at Biblica is to translate the Bible in strategic languages of the world. Sports is not only a strategic language but a universal one.”
A “Biblica Ambassador” who has visited India to see the Game of Life outreach in action, Davis said that he was pleased to be able to support the initiative. “The book itself is exciting, because I know the power of a strong testimony,” he said.  “I see how sports changed my life and helped lift me out of hopeless circumstances. Jesus became a part of that and I know that it is the same for these kids. I see myself in them and want to help, as God opens doors.”
Donations to the Game of Life campaign can be made at www.biblica.com/goal.

Press Release: 3 Factors That Can Keep Retirees Barely Hanging On Financially

The following is a press release.  This post does not necessarily reflect the views of Suzanne and David E. McClendon, Sr. or Manian Debil Productions.

3 Factors That Can Keep Retirees
Barely Hanging On Financially
They were an active and vibrant couple, determined that retirement wouldn’t slow them down.
And it didn’t, at least not initially, as they golfed, participated in activities with their homeowners’ association, and otherwise stayed engaged with the world around them. But a few years into their post-working years the couple grew concerned about whether they, like so many other people, might outlive their money.
“Their financial advisor had them using what’s known as the 4 percent rule,” says Ryan Eaglin, founder and chief advisor of America’s Annuity (www.americasannuity.com). “Essentially, the 4 percent rule says that in retirement, if you draw just 4 percent from your savings each year, that the money should last you the rest of your life. But it also might not.”
The couple came to Eaglin for something of a second financial-professional opinion after they saw an advertisement about annuities. Annuities are contracts between an individual and an insurer in which the insurer pays a stream of income to the individual for a specific period of time. In many cases, annuity income is guaranteed for life. In essence, it does what a pension would do, providing a steady monthly check in retirement.
Eaglin reviewed the couple’s situation and agreed sticking with the 4 percent rule might not end well for them. Through an annuity, he was able to get them a 6 percent payment that would last the rest of their lives.
Eaglin says a few factors this couple had to consider, and others in their situation could learn from, include:
  • Inflation. If you depend on the 4 percent rule, over time inflation will cause your buying power to drop. You will need to withdraw more to maintain the same lifestyle, speeding up your appointment with the day you run out of money, or you will need to cut back on spending. Eaglin acknowledges that inflation also affects annuities, but the annuity will be returning a greater amount than 4 percent, providing extra cushion.
  • Possibility of market losses. When your portfolio takes a dip in your retirement years, it can be devastating. You don’t have years ahead to recover, plus you’re already withdrawing money to live on.  Equities, bonds, commodities – anything you invest in can go down in price, Eaglin says. But a fixed annuity does not. “The portion of your portfolio that is allocated to a fixed annuity can completely avoid market losses,” he says.
  • Long-term care. The odds are great that with any retired couple, at least one of them eventually will need some sort of long-term care.  “Long-term care is where people often get in trouble, especially if they also suffer losses in their portfolio,” Eaglin says. “The whole lifestyle changes.”
A few years after Eaglin set up the retired couple’s annuity, the husband suffered a stroke and needed care in a rehab center, and eventually at-home care. Fortunately, they planned for this contingency, including a long-term care rider in their annuity that doubled the amount of money they receive each month.
“For this couple, switching from the 4 percent rule to buying an annuity was all about security,” Eaglin says. “It did what it was supposed to do. They are never going to run out of money.”

The Aging Brain: Proven Steps to Prevent Dementia and Sharpen Your Mind by Timothy R. Jennings MD ISBN: 978-0-8010-7522-3

You would think a book written by a brain doctor that taught much about brain science would be terribly complex and hard to understand.  You might also think it would be boring. Nothing could be further
from the truth.

In the book The Aging Brain: Proven Steps to Prevent Dementia and Sharpen Your Mind by Timothy R. Jennings MD, we find an easy to understand book that explains in great detail what we can do to avoid brain problems in our young ones and also in us as we age.

Most often when you read a book that deals in health issues, you find that the author either takes the side of science only or of a natural cure and Christian stance.  Jennings explains why and how both are right and gives scripture references to back himself up.

If you want to know what foods to avoid to protect your brain, it is in there.  If you want to know what to eat, it is in there, too.

If your church has small group Bible study classes, it would do well to create a course around this book.
