A Better Place: A Memoir of Peace in the Face of Tragedy by Pati Navalta Poblete ISBN: 978-1-946706-99-7

We would love to say that A Better Place: A Memoir of Peace in the Face of Tragedy by Pati Navalta Poblete is an excellent “How to grieve” book.  We can’t because there is no such thing.

What we can say is that the author takes us through the stages she went through while coping with the sudden loss of her son from a not so random armed robbery.

While reading this, I found that there would not have been one good thing to say to this woman in an attempt to comfort her.  All of the go-to things that people say, and usually mean, seemed to make her mad.

No two people grieve in the same way.  There is no such thing as “Getting over it.”  Poblete has found a way to help her heal, at least somewhat. Perhaps by reading this book others will see that there is nothing wrong with them. Perhaps they can see that we all grieve in our own way.  Some continue to grieve the loss of a parent thirty years later and may still feel it just as intensely as if it happened just yesterday. Others may lose a child at a very young age and show little grief on the outside just a few days after the loss.  This does not mean they are not hurting.

A Better Place shows us that there might not be a right thing to say to some people while they are trying to find a new normal when there is no such thing for them as a new normal.

I think the big takeaway from this book is that it is okay to not be okay.  It is okay to not see the comfort offered by others. It is okay that the attempts at comfort offered by other people are not comforting to you.  That doesn’t make them any less sincere. It just makes it okay for you to grieve in your own way and to heal, if possible, at your own rate.

Am I Enough?: Embracing the Truth About Who You Are By Grace Valentine ISBN: 978-0785216179

Am I Enough? by Grace Valentine is a book of encouragement for those of us feeling like we are never enough. Grace is a young, single woman and her book is primarily aimed at younger women. However, we older gals can learn a thing or two from this young lady.

Where Grace has been, we have been and maybe still are, feeling like we are not and can never be enough, as judged by the human eyes and hearts in this world.

Grace encourages us to see ourselves as Heavenly Father sees us, beautifully made in His image. He made us and He doesn’t make junk. We are each beautiful AND enough!

One thing that I learned while reading this book is that one doesn’t necessarily have to be happy to be joyful. I can be sad, but still have joy in knowing that He has this all covered, including whatever may be causing my sadness.

“Out of the mouths of babes,” as they say. Grace tells it like it is and gives us questions to ponder along the way. Am I Enough? Has been an eye-opener for me in a multitude of ways. We older ladies are supposed to teach the younger ladies, but I think that we also should be open to learning from them.

Five Star Review

I give Am I Enough? 5 stars and hope that you will get as much from it as I did. I hope that you learn that you ARE enough, enough for Him, your Creator.

The Flying Tigers: The Untold Story of the American Pilots Who Waged a Secret War Against Japan by Sam Kleiner ISBN: 978-0-399-56413-0

If you like to read about fighter pilots or World War II like I do, you will enjoy The Flying Tigers: The Untold Story of the American Pilots Who Waged a Secret War Against Japan by Sam Kleiner.

This is a good account of what went on during the top secret days before the war.  It is the story as taken from letters written back home to the families and friends of those infamous Flying Tigers.

This is a very interesting story written, while trying to be factually accurate, to tell the story of the leader and founder of the Flying Tigers and his fight to keep the Tigers flying.

To be honest, I never knew how involved the U. S. was with China at the time.  Most of the books I have read mentioned the war in China more as a footnote than anything else.

We learn a little more about Pappy Boyington and his Black Sheep. We read about how a direct descendant of Robert E. Lee is buried in the rose garden at Lee’s home.

Four Star Review

We give The Flying Tigers four out of five stars.  It is a good book, but it just does not get to the level of “Can’t put it down.”

Overcoming the Hand You Were Dealt by Kisha Taylor ISBN: 978-1-944348-40-3

From time to time, we get a book that is just screaming, “Me next, me next.”  Overcoming the Hand You Were Dealt by Kisha Taylor was one of those books.  There are over 53,000 books in our to be read file, each with the hope that it will receive a review.

It is difficult to believe that this book is the first book out of the chute for this author. Taylor is a master storyteller who tells the story very well.

It does not matter that there are times this old Southern white male needed a hood-to-redneck dictionary. We speak the same language, Christian.

The author writes in such a way that you can feel the pain.  You can feel the betrayal. Readers follow as one person after another in the main character’s life hurts her in one way or another.

Then, we read in this true story of how the main character overcame all odds.  How she pulled herself up by the bootstraps she did not have and overcame.

We think Overcoming the Hand You Were Dealt would make a good book for a small group Bible Study.  The author makes no excuses for her character and she admits to mistakes along the way.

Five Star Review

We give this book all five stars.  It is one of those books you won’t want to put down.  One that you want to think everything is rosey in the end, but it is about real life. You will want to buy a copy for all those independent black women in your life and maybe a copy for that redneck man, too.

Persuasion: Dark Psychology - Secret Techniques To Influence Anyone Using Mind Control, Manipulation And Deception by R.J. Anderson ASIN: B07BQMGCLL

We like to read books on psychology. We found that Persuasion: Dark Psychology - Secret Techniques To Influence Anyone Using Mind Control, Manipulation And Deception by R.J. Anderson was a good survey into what types of influence are available today.

You are not going to learn how to turn your friends into mindless zombies simply by reading this.  Some people today are already there and need no persuasion.

We give this book all five stars.  We think it helps people learn a little more about psychology.
