A University of Houston theatre professor set me straight. I learned that real artist thrive. Then, Jeff Goins introduced this book, Real Artist Don’t Starve, and I learned even more how wrong I was.
This is very much like the once-believed notion that no one could break the four-minute mile and that the human body could not withstand speeds in excess of 10 miles per hour.
It is also like the concept an elephant learns when it is young. A young elephant is tied to a stake and tugs and tugs and can’t get loose. After a while, he stops tugging. Then, when he possesses the strength to actually pull up the stake, he doesn’t even try.
Jeff Goins addresses the notion held by many that artists must starve. He takes it and, in the Texas vernacular, yells “Bull Corn” and throws it right back.
Real Artists Don’t Starve is a great inspiration. It is well-written and very well-researched. Mr. Goins has a style that makes it fun to read the book and, if you aren’t careful, you might learn something. I sure did.
Did you know that there is a thriving artist who once walked on the moon? This old redneck did not.
Not only did I learn about artists, I learned about great business men, too. In some cases, one person was both.
I also learned about one of my idols, Jim Henson. Wow, what a story. I never knew what I did not know about him.
I loved Real Artists Don’t Starve so much that I read it in one session. I did stop to eat a few times but, this big old redneck ain’t ever gonna be confused with being a starving artist anyway.
I give this book all five stars on our scale of zero to five stars. I also give it two snaps up in a circle, a bag of chips, and a dozen Krispy Kreme donuts for good measure.
