Hobbies such as photography, pottery, and gardening can all be turned into money-making activities.  If you have a hobby, chances are good there is someone out there willing to pay for what you produce.  Suzanne is a professional photographer.  There are numerous websites out there dedicated to selling digital photographs as stock images.

You could also pick up a little extra jingle by selling your services as a semi-professional photographer.  Your would-be customers should be advised that you will do the best job you can, but you are not yet a professional and might not get the exact shot they desire,

An upfront, non-refundable deposit should be charged to offset any expenses you incur getting to the event, etc.

If you can start plants from seeds or cuttings, you may be able to start plants and sell them to nurseries and greenhouses in your area that cannot keep up with the demand.

Do you like to read?  You could proofread manuscripts.  Let’s face it, most new books could really use a good proofreader.

Do you like to sew?  Many people who are on a budget, but who cannot find modest clothes that fit, would love to find someone who is interested in making an outfit or two for them without breaking the bank.

Yes, if you are going to make a living as a tailor you need to charge professional prices.  However, if your customers are willing to accept a few imperfections while you learn, why not charge them a little less?  Your clients should understand upfront that you are not yet a professional, but you will give them the best product you can in the meantime.

You should require a non-refundable deposit upfront in an amount sufficient to cover your costs of materials and supplies.  If your customer does not want the finished article, you have not lost money on the deal.

Etsy

Etsy started out as a place where someone who handmade items could sell to people who wanted to have handmade items, but didn’t have the skill, the time, or just plain didn’t want to do it.  However, recently they have allowed items that have been manufactured commercially to be sold via their service.

Sellers pay a small listing fee for each item listed.  When the item sells, the seller pays a small commission on the sale as well.

Many people have made a good deal of money on Etsy.  We have tried it and never made a single sale.  Just like with eBay, YouTube, and blogging, you have to find the right thing to offer to the audience/customers you have.

Suzanne was able to sell a baby crown via her Instagram.  This was just plain luck.  A person saw the hats and scarves Suzanne had made and asked her if she could make a baby crown.  Suzanne made it and the customer was happy.

Maybe Etsy will work for you.  Or maybe you will find another forum from which to sell.  The big thing is finding the right market and then having the best price that the market will bear.

Lawn Care

If you have a lawnmower and a few basic tools, you can start a little side job mowing other people’s grass and performing basic yard care services.  If you have even greater skills, you may add landscaping and gardening to the mix.  Print you a few business cards and pass them out. 

In a small town, mowing a yard might fetch $50+.  In a more upscale area, even a small yard could bring in $200 or more.  You just need to know what the market will bear.

To do a little market research, look around your neighborhood and see which neighbors pay to have their grass cut.  Ask them how much they pay for the service.  They may not tell you, but it never hurts to ask.  Get a general idea about how much this type of service is going for in your area.  Watch to see what all the competition does for the fee.

Once you have a general idea what the competition charges, drive around your area and

look for houses with uncut yards.  Ask the resident if they would like you to cut their grass.  Tell them upfront what you charge.  Don’t be surprised if you get a lot of nos before you get your first yes.

Once you have completed the task, ask the customer how well you did.  Learn from any complaints they may have.  Leave a few business cards with them.

No matter what business you are in, always have a magnetic sign on your vehicle that has the name of your business and your phone number.

Remember, when you are first starting out to have any checks made payable to you and not to a business name.  Federal Law requires you to deposit any checks made payable to a business name into a business checking account owned by the business the check is made out to.
