The Tears of Gethsemane by Deborah Faulks was a difficult book for me to read and review.  It is very different from most books regarding Christianity.

When I first started reading this book, it was difficult for me to concentrate on it.  I started it over several times because I just wasn’t getting it.

I started to just set it aside for later, but then a prompting told me I really needed to get into this book.  I said multiple prayers and then dug into it.

Once I was able to quiet my mind, I was able to really understand what the author is trying to say.

Suzanne and I are from a charismatic, fundamentalist background.  This being said, we a have a few fundamental theological differences, but the overall feel and message of the book is completely in keeping with our beliefs.

This is not the kind of book one should just plow right through,  It is the kind of book that one should read with a lot of prayer and reflection.  One should keep their favorite translation of the Holy Bible handy and probably another translation to help when one has questions.

The Tears of Gethsemane would make a great small group Bible study. This would probably be the best way to approach it.  

Perhaps a group of Christians should take one chapter at a time and spend a week reading and re-reading it as well as prayerfully considering it.  Then, they could come together and discuss it in more detail.

If you miss this book, you have probably missed a blessing.

Trump Aftershock: The President's Seismic Impact on Culture and Faith in America by Stephen E. Strang ISBN: 978-1629995557

Whether you voted for Donald Trump or you didn’t, you have to admire the accomplishments he has made in his short time in office.  That is what Trump Aftershock: The President's Seismic Impact on Culture and Faith in America by Stephen E. Strang is all about.

Strang has definitely done his research. He cites multiple surveys and studies in his new book.  The information given is amazingly detailed.

All this detail does not mean the book is boring or that you will zone out when you read it.  It is an interesting book that makes one think, “I did not know that.”

Strang had several interviews with top Christian leaders like Franklin Graham and Dr. James Dobson to try to shed some light on this phenomenon that is sweeping the nation.  That phenomenon is how a US President could make more progress in his first 500 days in office than any other president in the history of the USA and very little of it making it into the mainstream media.   That which does make it is spun in such a way as to make it look trivial or bad.

As a way of disclosure, we have to say that we did not vote for Donald Trump.  We cast our vote for Castle. I, David, actually believed that Trump was meant to do for Hillary what Ross Perot did for Bill.

This same author wrote God and Donald Trump.  We have not read that one, yet. Trump Aftershock  is very well-written, well-researched, and detailed.  It is extremely eye-opening and would make a great read no matter whether you lean blue or you lean red.

Crude Blessings by T.M. "Roe" Patterson Review ISBN: 978-0-9980213-0-0

In the book Crude Blessings by T.M. "Roe" Patterson, readers are treated to a fascinating look into the life of two true Texans. We challenge you to read it without shedding a single tear.

This book makes for great entertainment, but it also provides a look at some truly great business minds.  

It can be exhilarating to be on the front lines of a startup business.  There is a special excitement when failure is not an option. This book puts readers on the front line to see how honesty and integrity can overcome a world of obstacles.

This makes an absolutely wonderful book with tons of life lessons.  

The sad part in all of this is that, according to several of the other books we have reviewed recently, such as The Aging Brain  and Unsafe at Any Meal , Alzheimer’s disease, Autism, ADD/ADHD and other brain related problems can be avoided. It appears that there is anecdotal evidence to support the notion that high fructose corn syrup and mercury in our diets cause these brain conditions.

We give Crude Blessings all five stars.  We simply cannot believe that this is this author’s first book.  Very few could write this well and tell a story this fascinating the first time out of the chute.

You would think a book written by a brain doctor that taught much about brain science would be terribly complex and hard to understand.  You might also think it would be boring. Nothing could be further
from the truth.

In the book The Aging Brain: Proven Steps to Prevent Dementia and Sharpen Your Mind by Timothy R. Jennings MD, we find an easy to understand book that explains in great detail what we can do to avoid brain problems in our young ones and also in us as we age.

Most often when you read a book that deals in health issues, you find that the author either takes the side of science only or of a natural cure and Christian stance.  Jennings explains why and how both are right and gives scripture references to back himself up.

If you want to know what foods to avoid to protect your brain, it is in there.  If you want to know what to eat, it is in there, too.

If your church has small group Bible study classes, it would do well to create a course around this book.

Never before in our recollection have we read a book on faith that actually made cold chills run up and down our spines.  Healing: Faith and Medicine: A Medical Professional’s Memoir of Healing and Dealing with Illness by Mark Davis actually gave us goosebumps.

Davis talks about how possibly the reason we don’t see as many miracles in the United States of America today as we see in third world countries is because here we have more resources to rely on. Perhaps he is right.  However, here, families like us who are well below the poverty level, realize that miracles happen every day.
