Guest Post: Your Kids’ FOMO Is Not Worth More Holiday Debt

The following is a guest post.  This post does not necessarily reflect the views of Suzanne and David E. McClendon, Sr. or Manian Debil Productions.

Your Kids’ FOMO

Is Not Worth More Holiday Debt

With the holidays upon us, parents are making a list and checking it twice. And that list seems to be getting longer … while the bank account gets smaller.
That often happens when kids catch an acute case of FOMO during the holiday season. The “Fear of Missing Out” includes not getting some of the gifts they want, or the latest, cool things their friends are receiving.
So mom and dad go way over the family budget. They hit the credit cards, and the holiday bills climb. After all, overspending on gifts and beginning the New Year with added debt is as much a holiday tradition as mistletoe and stockings hung by the chimney with care.
“Many adults annually prove they have not learned their lesson, and it’s an expensive one that keeps adding up,” says Jeff Dixson (www.nwfts.net), a financial educator and author of Winning The Retirement Game.
“Discipline is a prerequisite for financial stability, and this kind of chronic overspending of money they don’t really have certainly doesn’t bode well for a family budget, let alone a retirement plan. But habits can change, and the sooner the better.”
Dixson gives four tips for how to keep holiday shopping reasonable and avoid excessive debt:
•    Look at the big picture. Credit card use means putting off paying for something you didn’t have the money for. So forecast what that mounting credit card bill will add to your regular monthly expenses. “The long-term pain isn’t worth the short-term gain of getting the kids everything they wanted and more,” Dixson says. “Seeing their smiles on Christmas morning is nice, but you also have to see on paper the money crunch ahead; that can act as a deterrent.”

•    Use one card. If you must use a credit card, Dixson says, put the rest of your cards aside and use the one with the lowest interest rate. This also makes it easier to track your spending. “If the one card is included in your budget, fine, but remember you’re paying interest each month,” Dixson says. “You need to impose a holiday limit on the card.”
•    Make a real budget. It’s the easiest thing to do before all the shopping. Set up a budget each year as to what you can afford to spend (for example, $600 = $50 per month) and set this aside each month in order to have the money you expect to spend. But for many people it’s the hardest thing to execute when they’re out shopping. “They lose will power,” Dixson says. “It gets to be a little like gambling; you have to decide how much you can afford to lose, or how much you’ll go over without being totally stretched in January and beyond.”
•    Make it a teaching moment. The holidays are a great time to teach your kids about money, a lesson that could last a lifetime. It’s not a matter of being Scrooge; it’s about showing them money doesn’t grow on Christmas trees. Most families have budgets, and part of being responsible means not over-spending. “The greater good of the family is served rather than immediate gratification,” Dixson says. “They’ll learn something meaningful about money, appreciation and responsibility that will stay with them when they have families of their own.”
“If more parents could apply these forms of financial discipline during the holidays,” Dixson says, “it would greatly help them develop a long-term financial plan, as well as greatly help their kids.”

Book Review: The Employee Millionaire - Personal Workbook: How to Use Your Day Job to Become a Millionaire with Rental Properties by H J Chammas ASIN: B07J3DXB7D

There are so many books out there on “The Only One Way to Invest” that it will make your head spin.  Almost all of the books we read on investing start out by telling you what is wrong with all other forms of investing and why theirs is the one and only way to invest your money to earn an income.

The Employee Millionaire - Personal Workbook: How to Use Your Day Job to Become a Millionaire with Rental Properties by H J Chammas  is different.  He does give a little comparison and contrast between investing in rental property and investing in stocks and bonds.  In this case, he actually gives the pros and cons for both.

Nowhere in the book does Mr. Chammas tell his readers it is going to be easy.  He does not tell you that checks will pour in while you sip on umbrella drinks.

This book tells you how to get started on a fairly moderate income and then roll it into owning and renting out multiple properties.

He takes his readers through the whole enchilada.  He tells readers about the process of getting pre-approval for a loan and then finding properties and making an offer.

He even tells his readers what they need to take to the closing on a sale of property.  He attempts to make this “white-knuckle” event much less stressful.

Readers are given links to online forms that help with the whole process from start to finish.  He even takes his readers through getting their budget in line before they start.

We truly believe The Employee Millionaire is a must read for anyone attempting to find a way to add to their income in the least stressful way. This book will make a great gift for that would-be investor on your gift giving list.  We give it all five stars.

5 Day Weekend: Freedom to Make Your Life and Work Rich with Purpose by Nik Halik and Garrett B. Gunderson ISBN: 978-1-885167-81-1

This 320 page book is more like a course in life management than any we have seen.

If you take Dave Ramsey’s Total Money Makeover, stir in a little of Norman Vincent Peale’s Power of Positive Thinking, add a pinch of The Autobiography of Ben Franklin, and then top it with The Millionaire Next Door, you have the recipe for 5 Day Weekend.

5 Day Weekend: Freedom to Make Your Life and Work Rich with Purpose by Nik Halik and Garrett B. Gunderson takes your typical book on money management and stands it on its ear.

In these pages one will find tons of ideas about how to make more money through active methods so that one can then make more money passively.  This is one of those books you wish you had read when you were younger.

Five Star Review

Nik Halik has an engaging writing style that makes the book very readable and enjoyable and, if you aren’t careful, you just might learn something. We give it all five stars.

You may be thinking that 5 Day Weekend is just another book on finance; you would be wrong.  Instead, it is about living the life you want to lead. Readers learn about goal setting, planning, budgeting, and more.

Do the Math

We are going to start out this post with a shout out to our friend, Al Zdenek.  Al is a best-selling author and wealth advisor.  Learn a little more about him at the bottom of this post.

Forbes has recently re-released Zdenek’s best-selling book, Master Your Cash Flow: The Key To Grow And Retain Wealth. We would like to share with all of our How To Manage Your Monkey audience what a great financial advisor can do for you.

There are many things that Al advises that not only work for the super wealthy, they also work for us down here on the beans and rice level of society.

One of those things is for us all to “Do the Math”.  Whenever you are faced with an economic decision, it is important that you know how it will affect you.

It is just as important to know how that rent-to-own television will affect your ability to buy the Gi-Joe with the Kung Fu Grip for your kid’s Christmas as it is to know how buying that luxury auto will affect your retirement years.

You may be at the level where you contemplate putting off buying a Pumpkin Spice Latte (never had one) so that you can invest more in your retirement, or you may be at the level where a $1 large cup of coffee means your kids go without lunch money for a day.  Either way, it is important to understand that you should do the math before making any financial decision.

We here at How to Manage Your Monkey are sometimes asked, “Should I put my money in a Traditional IRA or a Roth IRA?  The best answer we can give you is, “It depends.”  Another answer would be to “Do the Math.” We do not yet know what Al would advise in this situation.

No one knows what the tax laws will be like in the future.  Therefore, some financial writers we have read, and there have been many, say “Both”.  It really boils down to where you are right now financially-speaking versus where you believe you will be when you start to draw the money out.

If you are like us, well below the poverty line, taking the tax bite right now would be a good idea.  We know that one day we will be one of the super wealthy that Al advises.

But, if you are making a very good income right now, and you believe that you will be in a lower tax-bracket in your retirement years, then it might be wise to defer the taxes.

This brings up another one of the very wise bits of advice that Zdenek gives his readers in his first book. Consult a trained, licensed professional.  When you are dealing with your financial future, it is always wise to let someone who knows what they are doing look over your financial plans and advise you.

Whether you are the kind of person who knows the differences in wine vintages or you are like many of our friends that know the difference between red label and blue label Thunderbird, it is always important to have a good, solid financial plan based on the best financial advice available.

Al has a new book coming out in March of 2018.  Even though Manian Debil Productions is a Top Reviewer on Amazon, we do not yet know if we will be one of the lucky ones chosen to review the book.

Even if you have to roll the change under your couch cushion to buy Master Your Cash Flow: The Key To Grow And Retain Wealth, you should add it to your financial library.  It will make a great Christmas gift for those on your list who are serious about their retirement years.
